Sarung Keris Banyusurup

Keris’s Cover From Banyusurup

Banyusurup is a small village in the near of Imogiri graveyard compound, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This village used to be well-known as Keris (Creese) maker throught-out Central Java. “Because of Bali bombing, our sales decrease rapidly”. “There are many forge which can’t afford to stand any longer, and there are not many tourist who visit and buy Keris anymore”, said Mr Darto, the chief of local District. But in the lackluster of  Keris making and its cover, the forge which belong to Mr Jiwo, manage to survive and only focusing on making the Keris cover. “The masters who make Keris  are already passed away, today’s generation didn’t inherit those capabilities, so we have no one who can make keris here”. Add Mr Darto gently. So what will be the fate of Indonesian Keris in the future? There are still few who can make the keris cover, but what if there would be no one who are capable of making Keris?
